This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Home Assistant Energy Management system and website (collectively, the 'Service'). 1. Information We Collect

We may collect information about you in a variety of ways. The information we may collect via the Service includes:

a. Personal Data for Account Registration:

b. Energy System Data (collected from your connected systems with your permission):

  • Solar inverter data: including but not limited to solar generation, power imported from the grid, power exported to the grid, household power load, battery charge/discharge rates, and battery state of charge (level).

c. Third-Party Service Data (collected with your permission or as necessary to provide the Service):

  • Electricity Provider Data: Current electricity buy and sell prices from your nominated provider (e.g., LocalVolts, Amber Electric).
  • Solar Forecast Data: Expected solar generation forecasts for your location for the upcoming week from providers like Solcast.
  • Weather Data: Weather information for your location from services such as the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

d. Payment Information (for Premium Plan users):

  • When you subscribe to our premium plan, payment is processed by Stripe, Inc. ('Stripe'). We do not directly collect, store, or have access to your full credit card details. Stripe handles all payment processing and stores your payment information securely according to their privacy policy and terms of service. We may receive information from Stripe such as the last four digits of your card, card type, and expiration date for verification and account management purposes.

e. Device and Usage Information (Standard Website Data):

  • We may collect information automatically when you visit our website, such as your IP address, browser type, operating system, access times, and the pages you have viewed directly before and after accessing the site. This is generally for website analytics and security.

2. How We Use Your Information

Having accurate information permits us to provide you with a smooth, efficient, and customised experience. Specifically, we may use information collected about you via the Service to:

  • Create and manage your account.
  • Provide the core functionality of the Home Assistant Energy Management system, including:
    • Analysing your energy generation, consumption, and storage.
    • Making automated decisions regarding your solar inverter's operation (e.g., when to charge your battery, export electricity to the grid, or draw from the battery) based on your data, electricity prices, and forecasts.
    • Optimising your energy usage to potentially save costs or maximise self-consumption.
  • Process payments for premium services through our third-party payment processor (Stripe).
  • Send you service-related communications, such as account verification, changes to our services, technical notices, updates, and security alerts.
  • If you opt-in to use the NTFY notification service, send you notifications regarding events such as electricity price spikes. No other personal information is sent via NTFY.
  • Monitor and analyse usage and trends to improve your experience with the Service.
  • Maintain the security and integrity of our Service.
  • Respond to your comments, questions, and customer service requests.
  • Comply with legal obligations.

3. Disclosure of Your Information

We do not sell, trade, rent, or otherwise transfer your personally identifiable information to outside parties except as described below:

  • Service Providers: We may share your information with third-party vendors, service providers, contractors, or agents who perform services for us or on our behalf and require access to such information to do that work. The primary example of this is:
    • Stripe: For payment processing for premium services. Stripe handles all payment processing and stores your payment information securely according to their privacy policy and terms of service. We encourage you to review Stripe's privacy policy.
  • Notification Service (NTFY):
    • If you choose to use our notification service, our Service will send notification data (such as price spike alerts, which do not contain other personal information) to our self-hosted NTFY instance for the purpose of delivering these alerts to you. We do not share this data with NTFY's public servers or any other third party for this purpose. The operation of our self-hosted NTFY instance is managed by us.
  • By Law or to Protect Rights: If we believe the release of information about you is necessary to respond to legal process, to investigate or remedy potential violations of our policies, or to protect the rights, property, and safety of others, we may share your information as permitted or required by any applicable law, rule, or regulation.
  • Business Transfers: We may share or transfer your information in connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company.
  • Aggregated or Anonymised Data: We may share aggregated or anonymised information that does not directly identify you for research, analysis, or other purposes.

We use administrative, technical, and physical security measures to help protect your personal information. While we have taken reasonable steps to secure the personal information you provide to us, please be aware that despite our efforts, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable, and no method of data transmission can be guaranteed against any interception or other type of misuse. Any information disclosed online is vulnerable to interception and misuse by unauthorised parties. Therefore, we cannot guarantee complete security if you provide personal information.

Specifically regarding payment information, all credit card transactions are processed securely through Stripe, and we do not store your full credit card details on our servers.

We will retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with the Service and to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. If you wish to cancel your account or request that we no longer use your information to provide you services, please contact us at [email protected]. We may retain and use your information as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements, even after you close your account. We may also retain log files for internal analysis purposes. These log files are generally retained for a short period, except where they are used for site safety and security, to improve site functionality, or we are legally obligated to retain them for longer periods.
